Neither the name of the director (first-timer Florian Sigl) nor the names of the screenwriters (Andrew Lowery and Jason Young, whose respective filmographies elicit a reaction between "meh" and "yikes") hold the key to what you can expect from this movie. Instead, consider Roland Emmerich, one of its creators. The brains behind various elaborate blockbusters with points running the range from outsider intrusions (you might recall 1996's "Freedom Day") to who in the world truly composed Shakespeare's plays (you most likely don't recollect 2011's "Unknown"), Germany's deficient solution to Baz Luhrmann here applies his imprimatur to a Mozart-for-tweens work out.

Tim Walker, a young Englishman played by Jack Wolfe, is sent to the fictional Mozart International School in Germany, which has a vibe similar to Hogwarts for musicians. Tim still decides to play Prince Tamino in the school's upcoming Mozart opera production, despite being undercut by an imposing professor (F. Murray Abraham, if you remember "Amadeus" or not), distracted by a female classmate, and having to dodge local bullies.

Tim is transported into the world of "The Magic Flute" itself when, one evening, the three child spirits of that very opera, imitating Tinkerbell in some way, lead him through a passageway. He is chased by a huge serpent over rough terrain, just like in the opera, but this time it is a CGI beast, just like in a Roland Emmerich movie. It's kind of neat in a way. In another manner it's sort of dopey.
