As straightforward as the film itself is the title. Sisu, which means perseverance, especially in the face of despair, delivers on its promise of a bare-knuckle action-heavy thriller.

The English-language film directed by Jalmari Helander takes place during World War II, when there were vicious Nazis, a war-ravaged land, and at least one Finn with a penchant for money. Aatami (Jorma Tommila) has discovered a gold stash and is determined to safeguard it at all costs. What's the point if a Nazi battalion is following him?

Aatami, a cross between John Wick and Boris the Blade, continues to fight. Sisu has good judgment and moves quickly from one chaotic moment to the next. The film effectively deploys its surprises, and the lack of dialogue enhances the impact of squeaking intestines and exploding intestines. Instead, we are invited to marvel at Aatami's ability to live up to his immortality claim.

It's a bad idea to devote some words to Aatami's background. We don't need to know anything about this killing machine and neither do we want to. Due to Jorma Tommila's lack of personality, Aatami receives minimal attention and no interest in his inventive methods of dispatch. At least, Aksel Hennie's performance as brutal Bruno, who is as pig-headed as Aatami, is more fun.

Helander allows himself a few laughs after exhausting all options and being forced to cut the movie down to 93 minutes. We are getting close to the credits when Sisu switches from an unlikely survival drama to a straight-up farce. Economy gets all the credit, and knowing when the show is over gets a few extra points.
